Exploratory Walks Wednesday February 13

By | Explore Walk
Moderate walk : Car Pool from Eltham Lower park at 8.30am
Park in the small car park in Conos Ct, close to Park Rd (Mel 49 A1), or in adjacent Park Rd .
The walk will follow the section of the Mullum Mullum Creek Trail completed in 2018.
Cross Park Rd, and walk downhill to the point where a trail along the creek is on the right. Walk to Heads Rd and beyond, possibly through to the Mullum Mullum Tunnel. Retrace steps back to Park Rd.  If time allows, turn right along Park Rd, cross the road, and pick up the path within the Alan Morton Reserve (and which runs parallel to Park Rd. Walk to the roundabout at Drayton Cres (Mel 35 C11), then retrace steps back to the cars.
The section of the walk which uses the new trail is very easy. Members who would normally do the Easy walks will have no difficulty with this. On completing the section of the Mullum Mullum Trail, they can turn left and return to the cars several hundred metres back along Park Rd. Walkers who normally do the Moderate walks might like to do the extension through the Alan Morton Reserve.
EASY Walk : Koonung Creek Circuit                  8kms

The walk begins at Elgar Park, corner of Elgar Rd and the Eastern Freeway.

Walk north 100 metres along the concrete path to a T junction.  Turn right and walk under the Elgar Rd bridge.

Follow the path (creek on your left), walking through the Frank Sedgman Reserve.  When you arrive at Station St take the left-hand path up onto Station St and go northwards.  Cross where safe and walk north again a short way to Whittens Lane (about 100 metres, a dead-end on your right).  Enter this and look for a path on the right: take this and walk about 1½ kms through Tram Rd Reserve and Koonung Creek Linear Reserve to Wetherby Rd.  Go under this and continue to Blackburn Rd.

Walk southwards along Blackburn Rd, crossing the freeway.  Look for the trail on your right.  Take this and return to the cars.

Exploratory Walk Wednesday 1st August Macleod

By | Explore Walk

Hi everyone

The exploratory walk on Wednesday 1 August will be in Macleod following a route that is similar for about half the distance to walk number 175. It is a circuit walk and will include Gresswell Habitat Link and Gresswell Forest Reserve, but not the La Trobe Wildlife Sanctuary. The walk will start near Macleod Station. There are more details below.

Cheers

Chris

Wednesday 1 August, Exploratory Walk: Harry Pottage Reserve to Gresswell Forest, Macleod

Easy, 6.5 km, no car pooling, Mel 20 A7

Park in Glenmore St, Macleod, beside the reserve at the Wungan St end. There will be some cars belonging to railway commuters already parked there, but there should be enough spaces further along Glenmore St. Meet in Glenmore St beside the Harry Pottage Reserve at 9.30 am.

The walk will cross a couple of reserves not far from Macleod Station and then head through the Springthorpe Estate, passing the former Mont Park Psychiatric Hospital and following a lovely water feature known as The Cascade. We will then enter the Gresswell Habitat Link and the Gresswell Forest Reserve, and take a couple of tracks south through the forest reserve and exit through a southern gate onto Vincent St. From there the Dunvegan Parkland will lead us back to Glenmore St and the cars.

Coffee will be at Mr Macleod in Carwarp Street.

Exploratory Walk – Wed 16th May

Exploratory Walk Wednesday 16th May, Plenty Gorge Park, South Morang and Plenty.

The walk commences from a car park on Gorge Rd South Morang (Mel  183 J12)

Carpooling from Diamond Valley Sports Complex car park (Mel  11 A10) 9.00 am.

Leave the car park turning right and then left at the roundabout onto Diamond Creek Rd. Drive about 1.7 km and turn left onto Yan Yean Rd. Travel  approximately 3.7 km to turn left at a roundabout onto Kurrak Rd. Follow this road down to and cross the Plenty River to rise up to Gorge Rd. Near the top is the Middle Gorge car park on your left where we start the walk from.

The walk follows Parks Victoria and bike tracks mostly following the river. You will view the gorge from many points most people will never see. It is quite spectacular. It is definitely a medium walk and poles are strongly recommended. There are a few steep ups and downs but all are short. I’m not sure on distance 5-6 km I think. It takes about 2 hours. Coffee at Plenty Views Golf Driving Range Yan Yean Rd.

Cheers

Next Saturday Walk, Tanglefoot Track Toolangi

By | Explore Walk, Weekend Walk

To all Members,

Attached is a note from Roger and detailed walking notes about the upcoming Saturday walk.

The walk for Saturday, April 14 will be the Tanglefoot Track at Toolangi. This walk is adjacent to the Myrtle Gully walk (done as an extended walk about 2 weeks ago). It is about 10.5km in length, and has a long gentle uphill section, not dis-similar to, but a little shorter than, the Old Kinglake Road. The surface is generally good, but with a lot of debris (ie bark strips, small branches) underfoot – hence the name of the track.

The track is well sheltered with lots of tree ferns.

Please let Roger know, by Wednesday, April 11 if you plan to attend (rogerc@smartchat.net.au).

It will also help planning if you can let me know:

If you require transport from ELT.

If you can take passengers (and how many)

If you are planning to lunch at the Toolangi Tavern.

Cheers

Roger
